Woodroffe Legal Education is an independent training provider that teaches the law, and the skills needed to practise it. Our programmes span live courses, designed for groups, and one-to-one teaching, centred on the individual student. Together, they cover a route from a first introduction to law to preparation for qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales.
Glen William leads Woodroffe Legal Education. He teaches across both stages of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), drawing on more than a decade of university teaching and private tuition in law and legal practice.
Qualifications. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with First Class Honours from the University of Lancashire (formerly the University of Central Lancashire). There, he received the Oxford University Press Prize for Outstanding Performance in EU Law and the Maxwell Prize for Best Final Year Performance. He went on to the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at Manchester Metropolitan University. He completed it with a grade of Very Competent and was awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the Bar. He then read for the Master of Studies (MSt) in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford, graduating with Distinction.
University teaching. He was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Lancashire, and later taught at Liverpool John Moores University. His undergraduate subjects included Criminal Law, Evidence, Lawyers’ Skills, Employment and Discrimination Law, and Criminal Litigation and Advocacy. On Master of Laws (LLM) programmes, he taught international law subjects. At Lancashire, he led modules on the LLB and the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). At both universities, he set and marked assessments, and supervised dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
He has taught on the Legal Practice Course (LPC), and on the Professional Skills Course (PSC) for trainee solicitors. On the LPC, his teaching covered Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation and General Commercial Law, and he assessed drafting and client interviewing. On the PSC, he taught Advocacy and Communication Skills, and taught and examined Financial and Business Skills. He designed a professional arbitration programme, validated by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, which he taught on the PSC and as a standalone course. He has also delivered training for expert witnesses and led classes on examining and handling witnesses in court.
Professional experience. Before moving into university teaching and private tuition, he worked as an in-house consultant in the legal services department of a large human resources company. He defended corporate clients in employment tribunal proceedings, against claims including unfair dismissal, discrimination and those arising from business transfers.
International work. He is one of four founding directors of a human rights non-governmental organisation based in Switzerland, and remains a director. The organisation holds special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). He has made submissions to the United Nations human rights treaty bodies.
Live contact with a tutor, online and in real time, is at the core of every programme, in courses and one-to-one teaching alike. Courses each cover a fixed syllabus in sequence, and may be taught through lectures, classes or both. Lectures are designed for group delivery and are presented live as standard. Classes, including workshops, are interactive and typically taught in small groups.
One-to-one tutorials and coaching are personalised. Each session is tailored to your learning needs and to where you are in your preparation. You work in direct discussion with an experienced teacher of law and legal practice.
Whatever your background — a law degree, another discipline entirely or a career built on experience rather than a degree — you are taught to the same high standard. You join at whatever point your study of law, or your preparation for the SQE, has reached.
Our programmes allow for part-time, flexible study. You book only the courses and sessions your preparation needs, and decide how much to take on at once. Each course has a single fee, which covers its full run. One-to-one sessions can be booked one at a time, with no minimum number to commit to in advance.
Live delivery and direct tutor contact are what Woodroffe considers essential to demanding legal training. Pricing is structured so that no one is asked to pay for more than the stage they are on.
Woodroffe works on the premise that professional-level legal education should be widely accessible, with no compromise in how it is taught. The programmes below span a route from complete beginner through to preparing for qualification as a solicitor.
Learning Law. A six-week introduction to law for complete beginners weighing up a move into the profession, before committing to SQE preparation.
SQE1 Short Courses. Structured teaching for SQE1, each course covering a single subject through weekly live lectures and small-group classes.
One-to-One SQE1 Tuition. Tuition on the subjects and topics of your choice, taught through single best answer questions to build both your command of the law tested in SQE1 and your exam technique.
One-to-One SQE2 Skills Coaching. Coaching in the legal skills SQE2 assesses, through role-play and written exercises, with direct feedback from your tutor on each performance.
If you are registered to study with Woodroffe, sign in to the Student Portal to book. If you are not, register with us to begin. Registration is free, and the form takes a few minutes. Once you are approved, you can book any available course or one-to-one session.
Registering to study with us does not register you to sit the SQE. The two are entirely separate. Woodroffe Legal Education is an independent training provider. The SQE is centrally assessed by the appointed assessment organisation of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The SRA sets its own eligibility criteria for candidates. You register for the assessments directly with the SRA. See sqe.sra.org.uk for the SRA’s guidance on eligibility and registration.
