Woodroffe's SQE2 skills coaching consists of personalised one-to-one sessions with a tutor. Each session is tailored to the individual candidate and focused on the specific format and demands of the examination.
SQE2 is the second stage of the centrally assessed Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). Where SQE1 tests functioning knowledge of fundamental legal rules and principles, SQE2 tests the legal skills needed to apply them. Candidates interview a client, research a point under time pressure, draft a document that would stand up in practice, or argue a case in front of an assessor. Woodroffe's coaching prepares you for exactly that. Sessions consist of rehearsal, repetition and close feedback on performance, applied within the context of the substantive law.
Each session lasts one hour and takes place entirely online, in real time, via Google Meet. Sessions are arranged around a fixed weekly availability, so early booking is recommended. Coaching is delivered by a tutor with a background in university and professional level legal education, including the teaching of practical legal skills to aspiring and practising solicitors. You typically work with the same tutor throughout your coaching, so that feedback builds from one session to the next rather than starting again each time.
You might be moving directly from SQE1 into skills preparation, returning to SQE2 after an earlier attempt, working towards SQE2 under transitional arrangements from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), or preparing for SQE2 after being granted an exemption from SQE1. Wherever you are starting from, your tutor begins there. After that, each session is shaped by what you need next to be ready for SQE2.
We welcome candidates from every background. There are no academic entry requirements for one-to-one coaching.
Please note: Eligibility to sit SQE2 is a separate matter, decided by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Confirm your position directly with the SRA.
SQE1 tests command of the law through single best answer questions. SQE2 tests how you apply that law in the context of legal practice. It asks you to structure a client interview, hold a line of argument under challenge, or draft cleanly against the clock. Coaching prepares you for these skills assessments through role-play and written exercises, with direct feedback from your tutor on each performance.
If you have sat SQE2 before and did not pass every station, one-to-one coaching offers a direct way to work on the particular skills or stations that let you down. Sessions can be targeted at those areas specifically, drawing on your previous experience of the assessment to focus preparation where it is most needed.
Under the transitional arrangements of the SRA, some candidates who completed the Legal Practice Course may be able to qualify without sitting SQE1. Instead, they take SQE2 and complete Qualifying Work Experience. If these arrangements apply to you, coaching can be calibrated to what your LPC training has and has not already covered.
Some candidates are granted an exemption from SQE1 by the SRA. They include some lawyers already qualified in another jurisdiction who can demonstrate equivalence in English and Welsh law. An exemption allows them to prepare for SQE2 directly. If you are preparing for SQE2 on this basis, coaching gives you a structured way to build the specific skills the assessment requires. Where needed, teaching in the substantive law can also be woven into your sessions.
The skills and practice areas tested at SQE2 set the framework for coaching sessions. SQE2 assesses six legal skills in total. Two are oral. One is client interviewing, together with the accompanying attendance note and legal analysis. The other is advocacy. Four are written: case and matter analysis, legal research, legal writing and legal drafting.
These skills are examined across five practice areas: Criminal Law and Practice (Criminal Litigation), including advising clients at the police station; Dispute Resolution; Property Practice; Wills and the Administration of Estates; and Business Law and Practice. Ethics and professional conduct are not treated as a standalone subject. They are assessed as they arise throughout each of these areas.
Within this framework, what a given session focuses on, and how it is taught, is agreed with you and guided by your tutor's judgement. Preparation tracks what you actually need. Sessions can follow a planned sequence where you ask for one.
Coaching sessions are delivered entirely online, in real time, via Google Meet. To book a session, you must be signed in to our Student Portal with the email address linked to your Google Account (we ask for this address as part of your registration). For each session, you will receive a meeting link and can join directly from a browser or mobile device.
Interviewing and advocacy are typically practised through role-play and immediate feedback on your performance.
Analysis, research, writing and drafting are developed through written exercises, which you then review and refine with your tutor. Some exercises may be timed, to reflect assessment conditions. The materials used in any given session, and the approach taken to it, are agreed between you and your tutor.
A fixed number of sessions are released for booking each week. Candidates are advised to plan ahead and secure sessions accordingly.
The current edition of the relevant Revise SQE manual is recommended alongside your coaching. Revise SQE manuals cover the substantive law and legal practice tested across SQE1 and SQE2, in clear, exam-focused material. You will need to secure your own copy of each relevant Revise SQE manual.
Please note: If you are registered with us, you may be entitled to a discount on manuals bought directly from Revise SQE, with a valid discount code, subject to availability and the publisher's own conditions. This is not guaranteed for every manual or at every time.
This programme does not carry a formal English language entry requirement. The nature of the coaching does, however, call for an ability to engage with legal material in English broadly consistent with an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.5 (Academic), or a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level of C1. If your language proficiency sits significantly below that level, you may find it difficult to engage fully with the coaching, or to make the progress you are working towards.
Please note: The SRA sets its own English or Welsh language requirements for admission as a solicitor, separate from our own guidance on English language proficiency. Confirm the current position on the SRA's requirements directly with the SRA.
One-to-one SQE2 coaching sessions are charged at £85 per hour.
There is no minimum number of sessions, and no obligation to commit to a block of coaching in advance. Sessions are booked and paid for individually, as you need them.
You need to be registered with Woodroffe Legal Education before you can book, and you need to be in the United Kingdom when you book.
Sign in to the Student Portal, through which you reach the booking system. You can then book and pay for sessions as you need them.
Registration is free and completed once only, via a short online form. We review each registration, typically within three working days. Once you are approved, you will be sent details of how to sign in to the Student Portal. You will need a free Google Account to sign in.
Once you are registered, you can arrange a short introductory video call with a tutor, at no charge. The call is optional, and you can arrange it before your first session. It lasts between twenty and thirty minutes. It gives the tutor the chance to understand where you sit in your SQE2 preparation — a first attempt, a resit, a transitional route from the LPC, or preparation following an SQE1 exemption — and which skills most need attention. It also gives you the chance to ask questions before committing to coaching.
There is no charge for registering with us, or for the introductory call itself.
Registering to study with us and registering to sit the SQE assessments are entirely separate matters. Woodroffe Legal Education is an independent training provider. The SQE is centrally assessed by the SRA's appointed assessment organisation, Kaplan. The SRA sets its own eligibility criteria for candidates. Registration for the assessments must be completed directly with the SRA. See sqe.sra.org.uk for SRA information on eligibility and the process of registration for examination.
If you are registered to study with Woodroffe, sign in to the Student Portal to book a session. If you are not, register with us to begin. Registration is free, and the form takes a few minutes. Once you are approved, you can book your first session, and can arrange a free initial consultation with a tutor beforehand to talk through your aims for SQE2.
