Book a personalised, one-to-one tutorial with an experienced tutor for SQE1, the first stage of the centrally assessed Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). The Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK1 and FLK2) assessments demand two things. The first is a solid grasp of the substantive law. The second is a practised, disciplined approach to the question format in which that law is tested. Woodroffe's tutorials for SQE1 are focused on developing both, in whatever balance your preparation needs at a given point.
Every tutorial lasts one hour and takes place entirely online, in real time. Sessions are arranged around a fixed weekly availability, so early booking is recommended. Tuition is delivered by a tutor with a background spanning university-level legal education and instruction on courses leading to professional legal qualification.
You might be building your legal knowledge from scratch, returning to study after time away, supplementing a course of study elsewhere, or sharpening focus on particular subjects ahead of an exam sitting. Wherever you wish to start, your tutor begins there. After that, each tutorial is shaped by what you need to work on next.
We welcome students from every background. There are no academic entry requirements for one-to-one tuition.
Please note: Qualifying as a solicitor is a separate matter, and the route is wider than many expect. Among the requirements set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is a degree or its equivalent. That degree can be in any subject. It need not be in law, and the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) is not required. If you do not hold a degree, the SRA may recognise other qualifications or work experience in its place. Confirm your position directly with the SRA.
If you are new to the study of law, or moving into it from another field, one-to-one tuition gives you a structured introduction to each subject for SQE1, at a pace set by your own starting point.
You may already work in a legal environment, in a paralegal, support or other non-qualified role. If you are ready to move towards qualification, one-to-one tuition lets you work directly with a tutor on a subject-specific basis. With or without a law degree or the GDL, you can use tutorials to consolidate what you already know or to build knowledge of a subject from scratch. Either way, you work through single best answer questions with your tutor, which sharpens your examination technique as you go. Because sessions are arranged individually, tuition can sit alongside a working week.
Whatever subject your degree was in, one-to-one tuition is personalised to you. Whether a subject is new to you or one you last studied some time ago, your tutor starts from what you already know and concentrates on what you need next.
If you qualified outside England and Wales and are preparing for the SQE, one-to-one tuition lets you target the parts of the SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK1 and FLK2) syllabus where your existing knowledge most needs development. It works alongside your own broader preparation.
If you are returning to SQE1 after an earlier attempt, one-to-one tuition offers a direct way to work on what held you back. Tutorials can be targeted at particular subjects, at single best answer technique, or at both, drawing on your experience of the assessment.
If you have passed SQE1 and are now preparing for SQE2, one-to-one sessions can be used to refresh your understanding of the substantive law in a particular subject, without committing to a full programme of revision.
SQE1 tuition addresses two connected aspects of preparation: substantive legal knowledge and examination technique. Command of the law on its own is not enough for the single best answer format used throughout SQE1. Technique, in turn, cannot substitute for knowledge.
Tuition covers the full range of subjects assessed across FLK1 and FLK2.
For FLK1, it covers Business Law and Practice, Dispute Resolution, Contract Law, Tort, and Legal Services. It also covers the Legal System of England and Wales, which encompasses Constitutional and Administrative Law and EU Law.
For FLK2, it covers Property Law and Practice, Wills and the Administration of Estates, Land Law, Trusts Law, Criminal Liability, Criminal Law and Practice, and Solicitors Accounts.
Ethics and professional conduct can be taught pervasively or as a particular point of focus.
What a given tutorial concentrates on is set by where you are in your preparation and what most needs attention at that point.
SQE1 is assessed entirely through single best answer questions. Each question sets out a legal scenario with five answer options, only one of which is correct. Doing well in this format calls for the ability to read complex fact patterns precisely, identify what is legally significant within them, and apply the relevant principles accurately. It also calls for the ability to tell apart options that look similar on the surface but are legally distinct. These abilities are built through sustained, focused practice. One-to-one tuition gives you a structured, individually responsive setting in which to undertake that practice and develop these skills.
Sessions are delivered entirely online, in real time, via Google Meet. To book a session, you must be signed in to our Student Portal with the email address linked to your Google Account (we ask for this address as part of your registration). For each session, you will receive a meeting link and can join directly from a browser or mobile device.
Each tutorial runs for one hour. Its subject and topics are agreed in advance and reflect your current priorities. The method stays the same throughout: you and your tutor work through single best answer questions in discussion, so that the law and the technique are taught together. Each session responds to where you are in your preparation.
A fixed number of sessions are made available for booking each week. Students who need tuition at a particular point in their preparation are encouraged to plan ahead and secure sessions accordingly.
The current edition of the relevant Revise SQE manual is recommended alongside your tutorials. Revise SQE manuals are focused revision guides, built around practice questions and exam-oriented guidance for the Functioning Legal Knowledge assessments. You will need to secure your own copy of each relevant Revise SQE manual.
Please note: If you are registered with us, you may be entitled to a discount on manuals bought directly from Revise SQE, with a valid discount code, subject to availability and the publisher's own conditions. This is not guaranteed for every manual or at every time.
This programme does not carry a formal English language entry requirement. The nature of the tuition does, however, call for an ability to engage with legal material in English broadly consistent with an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.5 (Academic), or a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level of C1. If your language proficiency sits significantly below that level, you may find it difficult to engage fully with the tuition, or to make the progress you are working towards.
Please note: The SRA sets its own English or Welsh language requirements for admission as a solicitor, separate from our own guidance on English language proficiency. Confirm the current position on the SRA's requirements directly with the SRA.
One-to-one sessions are charged at £85 per hour.
There is no minimum number of sessions, and no obligation to commit to a block of tuition in advance. Sessions are booked and paid for individually, as you need them.
You need to be registered with Woodroffe Legal Education before you can book, and you need to be in the United Kingdom when you book.
Sign in to the Student Portal, through which you reach the booking system. You can then book and pay for sessions as you need them.
Registration is free and completed once only, via a short online form. We review each registration, typically within three working days. Once you are approved, you will be sent details of how to sign in to the Student Portal. You will need a free Google Account to sign in.
Once you are registered, you can arrange a short introductory video call with a tutor, at no charge. The call is optional, and you can arrange it before your first session. It lasts between twenty and thirty minutes. It gives the tutor the chance to understand your background, current knowledge, preparation goals, and any particular areas of concern. It also gives you the chance to ask questions before committing to tuition.
There is no charge for registering with us, or for the introductory call itself.
Registering to study with us and registering to sit the SQE assessments are entirely separate matters. Woodroffe Legal Education is an independent training provider. The SQE is centrally assessed by the SRA's appointed assessment organisation, Kaplan. The SRA sets its own eligibility criteria for candidates. Registration for the assessments must be completed directly with the SRA. See sqe.sra.org.uk for SRA information on eligibility and the process of registration for examination.
